Functionalism, in architecture, is the principle that architects should design a
building based on the purpose of that building. This statement is less
self-evident than it first appears, and is a matter of confusion and
controversy within the profession, particularly in regard to modern architecture.
"There
should be no features about a building which are not necessary for convenience,
construction, or propriety" and "all ornament should consist
of enrichment of the essential construction of the building". -Augustus Welby Pugin

The roots of modern architecture are influenced by the
work of the architect Le Corbusier and the architect Mies van der Rohe. Both were functionalists at least
to the extent that their buildings were radical simplifications of previous
styles. In 1923 Mies van der Rohe was working in Weimar Germany, and had begun his career of producing
radically simplified, lovingly detailed structures that achieved Sullivan's
goal of inherent architectural beauty. Modern architecture is functional. Rectangular surfaces are proposed, which have a direct connexion to infinite spaces and flow. The space in this architecture plays an important role, which is related with the functionality of the areas we design. There are open spaces, and walls are used as a structural parts a structural part of the house; furniture and finishing are also taken into account. Function and space go together; the whole structure consists of a space that is divided in accordance with the various functional demands.
"A house is a machine for living in." -Le Corbusier

The contemporary architecture, 21st
century, goes beyond the
strict form and function of materials used in building. Contemporary
architecture describes those styles that are being implemented today and
includes an integration of materials with their natural habitat. Interior and
exterior spaces are design to incorporate the environment that they are in and
make the design a natural extension of nature. The contemporary architecture separates the inside and the outside; the architects learn how to desing spaces, which have to adequate to the time and the conditions, from the economic to the social or environmental conditions. This type of architecture has no practical functionality and it is full of ornamentation and forms. Functionality and space don't act as a whole, the aim when designing a space is not being functional but to adequate to the given conditions.
